To trap a soul in a stone, you need to have an empty stone of suitable capacity (more about this) and cast the Soul Trap spell, so that at the moment of departure to the other world, the victim is under the influence of witchcraft. You need to successfully cast the Soul Trap spell to capture ANY soul, you don't have to be a master of mysticism to capture great souls. However, in order to learn this spell, you must reach the rank of Apprentice in that school. Advancement in the school of mysticism will allow you to cast longer and more effective spells.
The enchantment that can be cast with a filled stone corresponds to the soul placed in it. So, placing the soul of a rat (tiny) in a large or great stone souls, you can only rely on the strength of a tiny soul.
The soul will be placed in the smallest stone suitable for it. If there is no stone of the required capacity, then the next largest free stone will be filled. For example, you are trying to capture the soul of a boar (small), you have the following empty stones in your inventory: tiny, normal, great, star of Azura. In this case, the pig will fall into an ordinary stone - you will have an ordinary stone filled with a small soul. Choose your prey carefully if you only have empty fairly rare Great Soul Gems left. Black stones can hold not only the souls of NPCs or Dremora, but also the souls of all creatures, while the game "thinks" that Azura's stone is "the most expensive", so if you have empty black stone and Azura's star, the black stone will be filled .
If there are no suitable empty stones in your inventory, then when you try to capture a soul, you will receive a corresponding message, and your efforts will be wasted.
A filled stone cannot be released from the soul, except for Azura's star - a multiple-use soul stone.
So, in order to learn this spell, you must reach the rank of apprentice (Apprentice) in the school of mysticism (skill level 25) and purchase it from the SoulTrap vendor.

Empty and filled stones can be found during adventures, as well as purchased from shops and offices of the Cyrodiil Mages Guild.
Like everything else, your trophies are mostly leveled. So, among random junk at level 1 you will find only empty tiny stones, from the second level small ones will start to come across, from the 4th - ordinary ones, from the 7th - large ones, and only from the 11th - great ones.

During the Necromancer's Moon quest of the Mages Guild, you can learn how to make black stones from great ones yourself. It turns out that altars of necromancers are installed on the territory of Cyrodiil, in particular, near The Dark Fissure, Fort Istirus ), Fort Linchal and the Ayleid ruins of Wendelbek. To empty a stone, you need to throw it on the ground and pick it up again. If there is no suitable soul stone in the inventory at the time of killing the creature, then the soul will be missed. With the advent of Azura's Star, a reusable soul gem, regular ones can be ditched in favor of saving space and money.
To charge a weapon, you need to select it in the inventory with the cursor, press the [T] key and select the appropriate soul stone from the list. Not all weapons are suitable for charging, but only those that have a white horizontal stripe in the stat window, such as staves. Used soul stones disappear and cannot be restored, and you cannot choose the stones that need to be filled and which ones to save, everything happens automatically. Meeting
Once inside the Riften Town Market, you can talk to Madesi the Merchant about his jewelry for sale. Search for materials
Flawless Sapphires, like all gems, can be found randomly in mines. One guaranteed Flawless Sapphire can be stolen from the shelves in the Inner Sanctuary of the Temple of Dibella in Markarth.
Mammoth tusk can be obtained from a killed mammoth, as well as bought from hunters and some merchants. Three guaranteed specimens can be found at the College of Winterhold in the Arcaneum; eight guaranteed specimens can be found at the Clear Springs Camp.
Gold ore can be found randomly, but the easiest way is to find a gold mine in the Kolskeggr Mine. There is also Mine Lost Chance; it is closer, but does not have as many gold veins as Kolskeggr Mine. On the other hand, you can just use an ore spell and convert one iron ore into one gold ore.
Reward
You can return found components for Madesi as you find them, or all at once. It will give you 100 gold for each element (i.e. 200 gold for two sapphires). After you bring them all, you can ask Madesi if he needs anything else, after which he will thank you with a leveled necklace.

- Completing this quest will count towards helping Thane Rift's quest.
- Try not to buy components for this quest, as the cost of purchasing a component may exceed their reward.
- The Clear Springs Camp is the location for the Bandit Leader's Bounty quest, possibly the Dungeons (Bandits) quest with Amren, and possibly the location for the Lunar Amulet quest, allowing you to easily complete multiple quests at once if you decide to find a mammoth tusk in that location.

Soul Stones (original Soul Gems) refer to various subjects, which can be used as traps for shower dying creatures and people. Stones filled in this way can be used for item enchantments or reloading enchanted weapons. Note that the Black Soul Gem can be used to capture the soul of an NPC and will always store Great Souls.
The game can also be found soul gem shards. They are classified as minor loot and are not true Soul Gems.

Bugs
- Sometimes, by throwing a stone out of your inventory, you can clear it of a filled soul without destroying it. This allows you to get rid of an unwanted soul (like a small soul in a Great Stone) without losing the stone itself.
- Filled gems can lose souls when they are placed in containers (such as nightstands), removed from the container, and put back into inventory. This happens if you already have empty soul gems of the same size and value. Apparently it's kind of a bug where gems get "tangled up" with each other (happens with Common, Small, and Tiny soul gems). It is recommended to save the game before moving empty and filled stones from the inventory. Losing filled soul gems can be annoying, so you can use your companion for this problem. For example, if you have a list of empty and full stones and want to stack them without losing souls; just give them to a companion and take them back if needed. Thus, souls made of stones should not be wasted.
- Solution: If you put soul gems in a container, you can pick them up intact by finding a filled gem of the same type (or via the console) and removing the problematic gems, having the found one in your inventory. DO NOT use a stone that you already put in the container, it won't work for some reason. Also, this does NOT work if there are less than 6 gems in the pack, only 1 full soul gem can be returned.
