Door hinges: types, classifications, selection. What hinges to choose for interior doors? What door hinges

25.04.2014 07:18

Door hinges play an important role in interior doors. As they say: "the spool is small, but expensive." The door leaf is held on the door hinges. The requirements for hinges are their reliability, durability, noiselessness and stealth ... which led to the creation of hidden hinges. Therefore, do not neglect the choice of loops for interior doors. So, today we meet such loops:

  • Hinges without mortise
  • Door hinges (right and left)
  • Hinges universal
  • Hidden hinges
  • Reversible hinges

Hinges without mortise(they are also called butterflies in a different way) appeared relatively recently. When installing the door, they do not need to be cut into the door leaf, which makes it possible to do without special tools. If the loop is closed, then the outer and inner parts of the loop can be distinguished. The outer part is screwed onto the door frame, and the inner part of the hinge onto the door leaf. Before twisting the loops necessarily need to drill holes for the screws! Usually drilled with a 2.8-3 mm drill. Due to the fact that the inner part of the loop is small, it experiences a large load. Butterfly hinges do not have a large margin of safety, therefore, having a lot of experience in installing doors, I recommend installing them on light weight doors ( e.g. laminated) , because over time on heavy canvases they sag (bend).

Door hinges (right and left) spread even during the union. They crash into the canvas and the box. Their main feature is the presence of the opening side - be sure to clearly define the opening side of the doors before buying such hinges! This is always an inconvenience, as both sellers and buyers are often confused. But their plus is that the door is always easy to remove from the box - just lift the canvas up. In terms of strength, these loops are not inferior to universal ones.

Hinges universal- the most common and practical door hinges. The name itself
says that there is no binding to the opening side. The hinges also cut into the interior door leaf and the door frame. Such hinges withstand heavy doors very well. The loop mechanism itself is very simple, therefore reliable and durable. Usually, door sellers, depending on the canvases they buy, select (recommend) universal hinges of different thicknesses. Thickness of heavy duty hinges is slightly thicker than the standard hinge. But their only minus is that you can’t remove the door as easily as the right / left hinges, you have to unscrew it.

Hidden hinges- these hinges are complex in design, and no less difficult when they are inserted into the canvas and the door frame. The cunning of their design was reflected in the price. From the name it follows that the loops are hidden. But they are hidden only when the door is closed. In such hinges, there is usually an adjustment of the gaps vertically and horizontally. Adjustable with hex wrenches included. The hinge itself is massive in appearance, so before buying such hinges, make sure that the door frames are of sufficient thickness and the hinge will have something to hold on to! The sellers are unlikely to tell you this - they do not install them. As for their reliability, I can’t say the same as about universal ones. There was a case when one or two loops sagged, and you can’t adjust it in any way (maybe there was a marriage in them).

Bilateral door hinges are mainly used where there is a high traffic of people. That is, the door leaf of the interior door opens in both directions, both inward and outward. Their application example can be seen in our subway. The spring tension is adjustable.

Our environment consists of various trifles, to which we do not pay significant attention, but all these details make up the atmosphere in which we live and are constantly present. Actually, these components form the surrounding interior, which our consciousness perceives as a complex, as a whole.

If everything in the interior is harmoniously combined with each other, then there is a feeling of its balance and completeness. In order for our environment to be more beautiful, comfortable and practical, it is necessary to learn how to correctly select all the components of the interior. One of these seemingly insignificant elements is the door hinge.

Currently, there is a fairly large variety of door hinges for different types of doors. However, it is worth noting the fact that almost all modern doors that are sold in stores, as a rule, are equipped with hinges initially, in such situations, the problem of choosing the right hinges disappears by itself. This is especially true for steel, aluminum and plastic doors, their design provides for the presence of all the necessary elements of door fittings, including hinges. The only type of doors where you can complete all the components yourself, according to your taste and discretion, is interior wooden or pseudo-wooden doors, they can be made independently or made to order, it is also possible to purchase the desired door leaf without any fittings. The bulk of the hinges sold are intended specifically for interior doors, and they will be discussed further.

Most often, ordinary card hinges are installed on interior doors. They are two plates - cards, sometimes they are called wings, which are movably connected to each other by a rod, each card has holes for self-tapping screws. In Russia, the production of such loops has been established since the Soviet era, they are mostly ordinary and dull loops, of various sizes and without any decorative coating. No one uses such hinges for installation on interior doors, they are more suitable for street fences or some non-residential premises, well, or for poor government institutions.

Card hinges for interior doors come in two main sizes in height - five and four inches, respectively 12.5 and 10 cm, the width of each card is 3 cm, the thickness is about 2.5-3 mm. Very often, people experienced in these matters call card loops, depending on their size, fives or fours. It is noteworthy that five-inch hinges have five holes for self-tapping screws on each card, and four-inch ones have four. The choice of hinge size depends on the weight of the door, for heavy doors it is better to use larger hinges, for lighter ones smaller hinges are suitable. Three hinges can be installed on very heavy doors, however, for light doors this option is also suitable, this will increase their operational properties.

The main materials for the manufacture of card loops are brass, steel and stainless steel. Brass is considered the highest quality material, this material is more resistant to negative influences and, as a rule, has a very high-quality stable decorative coating; it is simply not economically feasible to apply an unstable coating on such an expensive material. Steel hinges sometimes outwardly differ little from their brass counterparts, but they are inferior to them in terms of wear resistance and coating quality. Stainless steel hinges have the highest resistance to negative influences, such as moisture and temperature changes, they are suitable for use even in outdoor conditions. The only drawback of stainless steel hinges is that they only come in one color - the natural color of stainless steel, although experiments in this area are underway, but if colored stainless steel hinges have appeared, they have not yet become widespread.

The color range of card loops is not very wide, and basically shades of various metals are imitated in it, the predominant colors are: gold, chrome, nickel, bronze and copper, they come in both glossy and matte versions, it is also quite popular White color. There are also more interesting colors, such as coffee, matte coffee or mother-of-pearl nickel, but these are more exotic color options. When choosing a color, you need to take into account the fact that matte shades are considered more practical, various stains and defects are less noticeable on them, and glossy loops have a more pronounced sheen, which, sometimes, looks very impressive.

Among other things, card hinges are right, left and universal, in the first two cases you will need to know exactly how the door will open, in the last version it does not matter. The only advantage of non-universal hinges is that after installing them, it is more convenient, if necessary, to remove the door leaf, but in practice this is extremely rare and this advantage is rather arbitrary. Universal hinges, in addition to being suitable for any door, can have two or four bearings, which significantly increase the life of the hinge, simple hinges do not have more than one bearing. Sometimes figured caps can be observed on the stem of card loops, this is an exclusively decorative solution and designed to decorate the appearance of the loop, however, sometimes, especially on cheap loops, they do not have a good property to fall off.

An interesting solution, for those who do not like the unnecessary difficulties associated with tie-in loops, can be a kind of card loop - a loop without a tie-in or an overhead loop, it also has a third, popular name for a loop - "butterfly". Her cards have an intricate shape, one of them looks like a butterfly wing, in fact both cards are cut out of one card. The ability of such a hinge to fold up to the thickness of one card allows you not to make a selection for it either on the door leaf or on the box.

Another curious type of card loops are double-sided loops - they differ from all other types of loops in their ability to open in both directions, both outward and inward. Such a loop has a more complex structure and consists of three cards interconnected by massive rods. Each rod is wrapped around a spring that tightly presses the cards to each other, the tension of the spring can be adjusted, this design allows you to keep the door in a permanently closed position. These hinges, as a rule, are installed in passage places, most often on double doors; they are rarely used in ordinary apartments.

All of the above options for hinges, alas, are not at all suitable for doors with a quarter, on such a door, along its end, a sample is made, along all or part of the perimeter, by three quarters of the thickness of the door leaf. The remaining quarter, also called the vestibule, lies on the top of the door leaf, so there are no gaps between the frame and the leaf, which significantly increases the heat and sound insulation of such a door. It is because of this quarter that hinges with ordinary straight cards will not fit on such a door, but with curved cards, they are quite suitable. Such hinges were specially invented for doors with a quarter, each of their cards is bent at an angle of 90 degrees, so they can be cut into a quarter.

Another, the most common, type of hinges for doors with a vestibule are screw hinges. For such hinges, one card is replaced by two rods, two holes are drilled under them on the door leaf and the box, one rod has a screw thread and it can rotate to get inside the hole, for this a socket wrench is used. The other rod has a smooth surface, it is integral with the main rod, and easily enters its hole. These hinges have two adjustments: in height and in width, due to this, if necessary, it is possible to align the door leaf with respect to the frame. The main stem of the screw-in hinge is closed with two decorative caps, which, as a rule, can be bought separately; they, like card hinges, have different colors. There are also varieties of screw-in hinges with two or three rods, but they are of little use for interior doors.

Connoisseurs of novelty and unconventional solutions should pay attention to hidden hinges, they are widely used on metal doors, but they have been used for interior doors relatively recently. They have a rather complicated design and they require the most accurate installation, their distinguishing feature is secrecy, when closed on the door, they become completely invisible, hidden. Such hinges, like card hinges, can be right, left and universal, as well as screw hinges, they can have adjustments, but not in all models.

In addition to hidden hinges, there are other types of exotic hinges, but they are not widely used, human imagination, as you know, is limitless, and sometimes it can bring to life the most interesting and sometimes very unexpected and unconventional door hinge designs.

Regardless of which type of hinge is suitable for your door, it is better that it be from a proven, reliable manufacturer, countries such as Spain and Italy are considered world leaders in this area. The most common Spanish brands in Russia are Archi and Amig, Italian Armadillo, AGB and MORELLI, their hinges will serve you faithfully for many years. Other brands will almost certainly be inferior in performance. However, you will have to pay several times more for high-quality loops, and not everyone will agree to pay about 300-500 rubles for one good loop, instead of 50-100 rubles for a cheaper analogue. The dilemma between value and quality does not lose its relevance in this case. Nevertheless, personally, being a maximalist, I recommend not saving, but installing three hinges from well-known companies.

Dossier on the main types of door hinges (canopies): pros, cons, selection rules. Without exotics like hinges with a closer - we only consider what can really be found in the shops of your city.

1.REMOVABLE HINGES

Classic card loops of two halves (“cards”), affectionately called “dad and mom”. They allow you to instantly remove the door when you need it. The main thing is not to make a mistake with the type of loop: right or left.

Advantages:

Removing the door in 5 seconds. No need to unscrew anything - just lift the door. Convenient if you need to washing machine, paint or restore the door, replace fittings, etc.

High load capacity. The hinges will pull even heavy doors - for example, from solid oak or beech.

Durability. The warranty period is usually 7-10 years. In fact, correctly embedded canopies will outlive the door itself.

Floating and soft work. Structurally, these are the simplest hinges, so they are the least prone to creaking and less likely to require lubrication.

Flaws:

You need to know which way the door opens. Left hinges will not fit on the right door, and vice versa.

The design is limited to the classics. Any card hinges disfigure high-tech doors - these are just objects from parallel universes. They can get along with "modern" - however, there should be as few sharp contours and straight lines as possible.

How to choose removable hinges

Then decide on the thickness and size of the cards based on the dimensions of the door. All this is detailed (and shown) in the removable hinges guide.

Next, choose the material - steel or brass. In short: brass hinges are not stamped like steel, but cast. Therefore, they have less backlash and more precise geometry, they move softer and are less prone to creaking. In general, until 2008, everyone bought brass. But one crisis came, and after 6 years the second - and now worthy brass canopies cost 500-700 rubles per piece. Hence the dominance of steel hinges, the red price of which is 150-250 rubles per piece. 10 years ago nobody would have sold them. And I didn't buy it.

To reduce friction in high-quality hinges, there is a bearing and a thrust steel ball at the end of the axis. True, some manufacturers are cunning on this. With the same ball: if it does not rest against the end of the cap, which happens when the size of the axis is not observed, then there is zero sense from its presence. The bearing is a different story: a steel ring is sometimes put in its place. It is empty - no balls, nothing.

2. UNIVERSAL HINGES

Suitable for almost all canvases (except frank hi-tech), regardless of which way they open. An ideal option for anyone who doubts which hinges to choose for an interior door.

Advantages:

Suitable for left and right doors. Deprived of the main drawback of removable canopies.

The most durable in its price segment. So, the load capacity of Palladium canopies is up to 80 kg (for 2 pcs.). Interior doors are harder to sell simply does not happen.

Durability. They work just as reliably and for a long time as removable ones. We give a 12-year warranty on such hinges, but with proper insertion and operation, they can last almost forever.

There are models for doors with a vestibule. Their cards are not plate, but corner cards - just under the porch. An example of such loops is Palladium 401.

Flaws:

To remove the door, you need a screwdriver. 5 minutes to unscrew the screws holding the doors. 5 minutes to screw back.

Decorate only classic doors. And modern at the junction with the classics. With high-tech, it is better to use hidden awnings.

How to choose universal hinges

With the material, everything is the same as in the previous case: brass beats steel on all fronts, but costs 3-5 times more (500-800 rubles versus 100-250 rubles). It is very rare to find models from TsAM on sale - they are produced mainly in Europe. The question "why and for whom" remains open.

Bearings on the axle must be real - if only because there are several of them. It’s bad if there are empty rings instead of bearings: they reduce friction worse and grind off after 5-10 years, becoming an extra backlash link in the mechanism. The heavier the door, the faster the rings wear off.

3. LOOP HINGES ("BUTTERFLY")

These hinges are without mortise - you can easily install them yourself without a chisel and a router. Ideal for do-it-yourself installation, they still have a number of tasty drawbacks.

Advantages:

Installation in 5 minutes. The hinges are simply screwed through the drilled holes to the door and frame, and that's it.

Cheap. On average, 15-30% cheaper than mortise and many times more affordable than hidden hinges. For clarity: Palladium "butterflies" cost from 77 rubles / piece.

Universal. Fits right and left doors equally.

Flaws:

Small load. For two loops ~ up to 25-30 kg. "Hollowboxes" with honeycomb filling fit within these limits, doors made of solid wood do not.

Fixed. If you want to remove the door (say, to bring in furniture), you will have to unscrew the screws.

Are striking. Due to the fact that the hinges do not cut, they are visible not only from the outside, but also at the end of the door. If the door is in a classical style, this can be endured, but with modern and even more so hi-tech there will be a clear dissonance.

Low quality. This is an economy class with all the consequences: steel stamping, rough geometry, backlash up to 2 mm and dimensional instability. This does not mean that the hinges will lead the door in jerks, as in a slide show, but do not expect a smooth ride and long service life.

Problems with the doors will not keep you waiting. Often doors on "butterflies" sag - it's all about the ill-conceived, flimsy design of cards with low bearing capacity. For the same reason, multiplied by the backlash, the doors may not close. You will have to release the screws, placing a chip or a piece of cardboard under the loop.

How to choose loops without a butterfly tie-in

The most common size is 100 x 75 x 2.5 mm. For doors up to 20 kg, two such “butterflies” are enough. Moderately heavy doors (30-40 kg) are strongly recommended to be mounted on mortise canopies. But if you really like "butterflies" and you are ready to put up with their shortcomings, you can use them too. Only the size will be different: 125 x 75 x 2.5-3 mm.

4. HIDDEN HINGES (3D HINGES)

They are often completed with modern doors, especially European ones. Usually they crash in production, the chances of finding them in hypermarkets are near zero.

Hidden canopies are the only ones that are 100% suitable for high-tech and modern doors. It is also a non-alternative option when arranging “invisible doors” and an elegant solution to the rebus “I bought a blue handle - I don’t know which hinges to combine with”.

Advantages:

Invisible on canvas. True, when the door is closed.

Adjustment in three planes. Horizontally, vertically and press. If the door sags, it is enough to tighten the corresponding adjusting screws without removing the door leaf. Of course, there are models without adjustment at all, but these are “dinosaurs” living out their lives.

Flaws:

Small opening angle. Only expensive 3D hinges have 180°. Canopies open the door cheaper only by 90-100 °. Here, the load cannot be brought in normally, and the force must be calculated: if you lean on the door, you can pull out the hinge.

Complicated and expensive tie-in. It is significant that the masters, who take 1.5 thousand rubles for inserting card loops, ask 3-4 thousand for the installation of hidden ones.

The web thickness is critical. For example, there are hinges that cannot be cut into a door thinner than 40 mm.

Fixed. If you need to repair a door or fittings, it will be difficult to remove the canvas.

Actually, the price. One of the cheapest 3D loops (~30-35 kg; China) costs as a set of good universal canopies.

How to pick up invisible loops

3D hinges are universal, right and left; for doors with or without platband and rebate. Check if the selected model will fit your door. As already mentioned, pay attention to the allowable thickness of the canvas.

Another selection criterion is the number of support points, the softness of the loops depends on it. For lightweight MDF doors, 3-point hinges are suitable. For canvases of 30+ kg, it is better to take hinges with 5 support points, although the budget will have to be doubled.

The structure of modern entrance systems includes several elements: the canvas itself, locks with handles and hinges. All fittings perform their purpose. Doors without hinges will not be able to function - these small elements take on the main load, holding the weight of the canvas. There are several types of door canopies, but overhead and mortise are the most popular, consider the features of each type to understand which one is better.

Criteria influencing the choice

The highest requirements are imposed on the hinges on the door, and the main among them are:

  • strength;
  • aesthetic appearance;
  • long service life;
  • compliance with the design features of the door leafs.

Canopies on interior doors must be reliable. Despite the fact that canvases installed indoors weigh less than entrance ones, they cannot be called light. For example, solid wood doors can weigh up to 100 kg. For more details https://holz.ua/dveri/mezhkomnatnye/shopby/material_new-iz_massiva/ Canopies should keep them and function for a long time.

No less important aesthetics. Interior doors are an important interior component, it is important that they organically fit into the environment. When choosing accessories that differ in style, this will immediately be noticeable and spoil the overall impression of the interior.

When choosing canopies, you need to be guided by the design features of the input systems, they are different: one-sided and two-sided. In order for everything to function properly, it is necessary to choose the right hinges.

Giving preference to one or another type of canopies, it is necessary to consider the points associated with their maintenance, installation and dismantling. This will eliminate the problems with the operation of the doors.

Let's figure out how the overhead hinges differ from the mortise ones in order to make the right choice.

Overhead hinges

The most popular type of hinges, ideal for mounting on interior doors that are light in weight.

Such canopies are two plates, united by a rotary device. Their key advantage is that they are immediately ready for installation. Installation of overhead hinges does not require preliminary preparation of the canvas and the box. Self-tapping screws are used to fasten the plates. The installation process takes about 10 minutes.

One of the features of overhead canopies is their non-separability. To remove the door leaf, you will have to unscrew all the fasteners.

Canopies of the laid on type are noticeable when opened. This problem can be solved by selecting the material and color scheme for the style of other fittings.

The disadvantages of overhead hinges are insignificant - this is one of the best solutions for interior door panels.

Mortise hinges

Mortise canopies are simple in design. They must be integrated into the frame and door leaf. This type of canopies is the best option for massive door structures.

The mechanism of such loops, as a rule, is collapsible. This makes it possible to quickly remove the canvas from the box if necessary.

The downside is the need to prepare special nests before installing canopies. But after installation, such loops have an additional stop, which reduces the load and prolongs the operation of the mechanism.

Hinges are usually purchased with door leafs. First you need to decide on the type of input system, and then choose canopies.

Our environment consists of various trifles, to which we do not pay significant attention, but all these details make up the atmosphere in which we live and are constantly present. Actually, these components form the surrounding interior, which our consciousness perceives as a complex, as a whole.
